If you're receiving emails from me and Healthy Hands Cooking™, you likely subscribed because you're passionate about food, kids, or both. My name is Janice Walker Pinnington, but you can call me Jan.
Over 10 years ago, I created Healthy Hands Cooking (HHC) with a mission to teach kids about Real, Good, Food™ and equip them with the life skills they need to understand healthy eating and make simple, fun recipes. Our goal is to promote independence, pride, and confidence in cooking.
I founded HHC during a time when I wanted to use my corporate communication experience and love for food and health to give back.
I envisioned creating an army of instructors - one for every 15,000+ McDonald's Restaurants - to combat the loss of home cooking experience and the rising childhood obesity rates caused by our generation's addiction to sugar and processed foods.
My obsession came from teaching classes where one of my students thought that mashed potatoes could only come from a box. This sweet 8-year-old boy was serious...he literally had no idea that potatoes were a natural food that grows in the ground and is cooked.
That “aha” moment for him, was also an “aha” moment for me, which led to wanting to train, certify, help, and empower hundreds of other stay-at-home moms, entrepreneurial women, and foodies to start their local businesses where they could hold classes, camps, and birthday parties at their own pace.
As a hobby business, as a full-time business, as an after-school provider business, as a summer camp business, as a birthday party business, in a church, in a school, in a gym, in a karate studio, in a professional kitchen, you get the idea… this concept provides its instructors the ability to teach classes anywhere and on their own schedule.
So what exactly is Healthy Hands Cooking?
-Healthy Hands Cooking is two websites...a front-end marketing website hosted on Go Daddy, and a back-end site with a fully customized software platform written in PHP with hundreds of thousands of lines of custom code and hosted on Amazon Web Servers (AWS)
-The AWS-hosted software platform is the magic of HHC as it has everything to run this business and help thousands of others run their businesses too
-It has a full business certification program of 11 modules of online business training to help someone properly and legally set up their cooking class business using today’s best practices to reduce risk. It details every resource new instructors need from local public relations (PR) plans, to advertising suggestions, marketing plans, to legal requirements
-Once certified, the membership is a private login system that provides the tools, community, and resources to run and grow their business with support from other instructors
-It has a replicated website system so new instructors get their own personal website
-It shows instructors how to set up their own payment portal to take payments
-It has a fully integrated class scheduling system
-It has over 200 pre-made lesson plans, plus a lesson plan builder to create new class materials
-It has over 600 commercial-use recipes
-Legal, business, and marketing templates
-It has 12 lesson plan zones
-New instructors get two zones for free when they start their membership (kids' classes and birthday parties, and then can purchase other specialty zones to fit their focus such as...
Adult Classes
Bento Box Around the World Lunch Classes
College Cooking Classes
Cooking Camp
Cooking for Badges (Girl Scout Classes)
8-Hour Core Cooking Program
Legacy Chefs Classes for Senior Citizens
Preschool Classes
STEAM Cooking Classes
-The software can be duplicated, scrubbed, re-branded, and sold to additional multiple location service industries (such as health coaching) for even more revenue opportunities.
I estimate that there are over 10,000 personal hours of content and system development by me and my team building HHC. Since 2015, we have certified more than 650+ instructors.
Healthy Hands Cooking is perfectly suited to be run as a “for-profit” business where the revenue comes from new instructors who sign up for $997 for certification and join the membership for $75 per month. That is the way I’ve been running it.
But it is also perfect to be run as a “not-for-profit” that serves Title 1 schools, Boys and Girls Clubs, Girl Scouts, etc. Even a church or school could buy and run Healthy Hands Cooking. It is universally needed and ready to grow.
So whether you are an entrepreneurial soul or a stay-at-home mom with marketing savvy, or you have or know of a charity that wants to impact the health and well-being of kids today, Healthy Hands Cooking may be the business for you to run. It's a home-based business that requires no travel and no precise hours to operate.
It’s been my life for 10+ years and the friendships that it has created, the stories of love, kindness, and joy that have been shared by instructors, the sharing of community by our instructors having personal success and making a difference in their local communities – that is Healthy Hands Cooking.
For me, it’s been about the joy and love of being an entrepreneur, encouraging others, and teaching thousands of kids about Real Good Food.
But it's time for someone else to make it what it can become. It’s a business that can pay for itself and start generating recurring annual profits with the right marketing efforts. It is ready to go and ready to grow.
